2015 For Black Girls Art Reception

“When I attended the reception to receive my portrait, I had a smile on my face that I haven’t had in awhile.” — Aniya Smith-Jones, H.S. Junior

Art is a powerful medium. So, in 2014 we partnered with Atlanta-based artist Shanequa Gay to render 12 images of selected young women on wood panel.

After the creation of the paintings, we had an event in November 2015 to celebrate the beauty of these young ladies and to award them each with their portrait and a crown. These moments were so powerful that we began to document the journey, a journey to empower other black girls and women to embrace just how beautiful they are.

Black beauty deserves to be memorialized. It is a form of activism to do so. Below are a few images from the event.
